When Thoughts Become Energy

Have you ever thought about someone you haven’t seen in a while, only for them to call or cross your path later that day? Or woken up from a dream about a friend, only to hear their name mentioned hours later? These moments feel like more than coincidence—as if our thoughts, emotions, and energy ripple outward in ways we don’t fully understand.

This is why I developed the Meditation of Light and Compassion, a mindfulness practice rooted in loving-kindness meditation. In this guided meditation, we choose a phrase from the Metta prayer—my own version, slightly adapted—to deeply absorb into our being. With each breath in, we invite this intention to fill us. As we exhale, we radiate kindness beyond ourselves, sending positive energy to others and resting in a profound sense of connection.

Can Our Thoughts Truly Reach Others?

The idea of directing energy outward is not new. In spiritual traditions, it’s known as distance healing; in religion, it’s called prayer. While science hasn’t fully explained how energy travels between people, research in neuroscience and mindfulness meditation has shown that loving-kindness meditation (Metta) increases positive emotions, compassion, and social connection. Some studies even suggest that when one person directs thoughts of love and care toward another, their brain activity synchronizes in ways that hint at an unseen link.

But should we dismiss what we don’t yet fully understand?

Gravity existed long before we understood it, and the Earth was always round—even before it was proven. I choose to see science as a confirmation of what many of us already feel to be true. And even if the energy we send doesn’t reach another person in the way we imagine, mindfulness meditation still has profound benefits. Studies show that practicing loving-kindness meditation enhances mental well-being, reduces stress, and strengthens emotional resilience.
